Listen to DANEFAE’s new single ‘Fuglekongen’ HERE
Today, Danish progressive metal band Danefae releases the song Fuglekongen as the second single from the band’s second album Trøst set for a January 31st 2025 release. On Trøst (Danish for ‘Solace’), Danefae conjures a world of nature, myths, and magic, and at the heart of the band’s expression is vocalist and lyricist Anne Olesen, who draws on Danish legends and literature to craft personal stories, delivered virtuously through the band’s organic, complex, and melodic music.
Trøst doesn’t convey a general thematic thread but contains various stories about being human, specifically from Anne’s personal perspective. As with the first single Blind, the new song Fuglekongen examines a human existential theme, this time the question of free will. Anne Olsen states:
“‘Fuglekongen’ is a theft. I stole one of the themes from the classical piece ‘Danse Macabre’ by Saint-Säens. The mystical interweave of death and life gave me the inspiration to write like a conspiracy theorist: About the little Goldcrest as a symbol for our actions being governed by anything else than our free will.”

Danefae will be playing a string of Danish fall shows, with the first one being tonight at the renowned festival Way Up North in the band’s hometown of Aalborg. More shows will be announced in connection with the album release in near future.

DANEFAE began as Anne Olesen’s solo project in 2017, while the band took its present form when the four members started studying at the conservatory. Here, in an environment dominated by jazz and pop, they found each other through a shared love of rock and progressive metal. The lyrical inspiration is drawn from nature, the Danish language, folk legends, and songs. Complementing the locally rooted language and its layers of meaning, the Nordic tonal language became central to DANEFAE’s melodies. This fusion of the progressive and Nordic musical traditions forms the core of the band’s distinctive style, which can be simply described as progressive metal with Danish lyrics.
Danefae made their album debut in 2022 with Tro (Danish for ‘Faith’), which garnered attention in Denmark for its uniquely Nordic-sounding progressive metal, leading to the band’s first concerts around the country. Over the past few years, Danefae has worked intensely on their new album Trøst. Across the album’s eight compositions, you hear a band that has found themselves, each other, and the very essence of their unique style and musicianship.
On Trøst, Danefae masterfully combines the complex with the immediate, and their curiosity and ambition to continually expand their artistic palette, refine their instrumental skills, and to understand the human condition are central to Danefae’s artistic endeavors.
